Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pressing issue globally, with far-reaching social and economic implications. In Yola North Local Government, Adamawa State, GBV manifests in forms such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, and early marriage. Print media serves as a critical platform for raising awareness, shaping public perceptions, and advocating for policy interventions to address GBV (Abubakar & Musa, 2024). Through news reports, editorials, and feature articles, print media highlights the prevalence of GBV, its causes, and potential solutions. However, the effectiveness of this coverage in driving societal change depends on its consistency, accuracy, and advocacy efforts (Yusuf, 2023). This study evaluates the effectiveness of print media in addressing GBV in Yola North, focusing on its role in influencing public attitudes and policy responses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While print media has contributed to addressing GBV in Yola North, its effectiveness is limited by inconsistent reporting, lack of in-depth analysis, and cultural sensitivities that may hinder open discussions.
